FAQs

Yes.

  • The kiosk is cleaned according to medical hygiene protocols
  • It is largely contactless, which can be more hygienic than devices that require physical contact
  • Glasses: Patients usually do not need to remove them.
  • Facial hair (beard, moustache, fringe): Facial hair is generally not a problem for the measurement.
  • Face masks: If the kiosk cannot detect the face properly, staff may ask the patient to briefly remove the mask during the measurement.

EdgeVitals has conducted clinical validation studies in partnership with Swiss hospitals like Hospital du Valais to evaluate the accuracy of its rVSM technology for certain vital signs.

These studies have shown promising and consistent results when the EdgeVitals rVSM kiosk is used under appropriate conditions.

However, it is important to note that:

  • The kiosk is currently used as part of a pilot usability project
  • It is not yet a medically certified device
  • Measurements are indicative only and must not be used for medical diagnosis or decision-making

The EdgeVitals rVSM technology is designed to support and optimise healthcare and wellness workflows

Key benefits include:

  • Contactless and non-invasive:Vital signs are measured without any physical contact. Moreover, there is no need to undress or remove glasses. This approach is especially beneficial for elderly patients, young children, and people who may feel discomfort from being touched.
  • Fast results:Measurements are delivered in less than 30 seconds, allowing quick checks during busy periods or long waiting times.
  • Inclusive by design:The technology is designed to work across different skin tones and ethnicities and is not affected by tattoos, facial hair or glasses.
  • Hygiene-friendly:Being contactless, it reduces the need for shared contact surfaces compared with traditional devices.
  • Future medical accuracy:Once medically certified, the technology is designed to achieve medical-grade accuracy comparable to standard clinical devices.
  • No additional hardware required:The same technology is also available as a software solution (SDK or application) for phones, tablets, and computers. This means it can be deployed without dedicated hardware, making it a cost-effective solution and enabling additional use cases such as telemedicine, remote pre- and post-operative assessments, and remote monitoring of vital signs for patients with chronic conditions like cardiac or pulmonary diseases.

Important: EdgeVitals rVSM kiosk is not yet a certified medical device. Any values displayed or generated must not be used for medical diagnosis, treatment, or clinical decision-making. All measurements must be retaken and validated by qualified medical staff using approved medical devices. The current project is a pilot intended to evaluate user experience.

Only the numerical results of the vital signs measurements are securely transmitted to the EdgeVitals portal using internet. This portal is accessible only by authorized staff using verified credentials.

On the EdgeVitals portal:

  • No patient-identifying information (such as name or date of birth) is stored
  • Results are displayed without personal or medical context

Authorized staff may then copy the numerical results and insert them into a patient admissions or administration system, where all patient identity and personal details are managed.

EdgeVitals does not have access to any medical systems, patient records, or personal data.

No raw images or videos are transmitted, and no data is shared with third parties for commercial or advertising purposes.

Yes. Privacy is a core design principle.

  • No images or videos are stored
  • Results are available only to authorized staff
  • Vital Signs results are not linked to patients’ identity within the EdgeVitals system
  • EdgeVitals does not have access to patients’ personal medical file
  • No data is shared with third parties
  • No data is used for commercial or advertising purposes

The system is designed in accordance with Swiss and European data protection regulations.

The measurement itself takes about 25 to 30 seconds. For best results, please:

  • Sit or stand up comfortably, look at the screen
  • Stay still and avoid talking during the assessment

The kiosk works in two steps:

  1. Face detection and positioning The kiosk uses AI to detect and center your face on the screen so the measurement can be performed correctly. This is not identity recognition and not biometric identification.
  2. Vital signs measurement (rPPG) The kiosk uses rPPG (remote photoplethysmography): it analyzes tiny, invisible changes in skin color caused by blood circulation. These changes are processed mathematically in real time to estimate vital signs.

Using the kiosk is voluntary. Patients can decline at any time.

Patients may be asked to use the kiosk:

  • When they arrive, during registration, before they are seen by a clinician
  • If waiting times are long
  • If they say their symptoms are getting worse while their wait

Using the kiosk helps staff to:

  • Better monitor patients while they are waiting
  • Flag patients who may need earlier clinical attention
  • Improve the waiting experience by offering a simple way to check vital signs

Important: The measurements collected by the kiosk do not replace vital signs taken by qualified medical staff. The EdgeVitals kiosk is part of a pilot usability project and is not a certified medical device. Any values displayed are indicative only and must not be used for medical diagnosis or clinical decision-making.

The EdgeVitals rVSM (Remote Vital Signs Monitoring) kiosk is a tool used by medical secretaries and receptionists to collect a patient’s vital signs during their visit.

The kiosk can display the following vital signs:

  • Heart rate (HR)
  • Heart rate variability (HRV)
  • Breathing rate (BR)
  • Oxygen saturation (SpO₂)
